Mayor Littlejohn's Message

Our Klondyke E-Newsletter focuses on good news from the town of Bay Roberts.

The town of Bay Roberts was officially proclaimed the national winner in the Winners Circle: Small Category [towns under 50,000] in the nation-wide Winterlights Celebration. The award recognized the Amalgamated Academy for its Community Spirit and Goodwill Programs.

Mayor Glenn Littlejohn and Principal Bertha Taylor, Amalgamated Academy.

In keeping with our focus on year round special events, the town has a new website, www.bayrobertsevents.com, which has information and pictures. As part of special events program, the town is very proud to bring you the 12th Klondyke Days and Concert. This event has now grown to 20 days of food, fun and entertainment including our Klondyke Concert on Saturday, August 4th and don’t forget our closing fireworks on Monday, August 6th beginning at dusk.

We were very pleased when Statistics Canada confirmed the town growth which we had seen occur since 2001. Our town population has grown by 3.4%, and a number of neighbouring towns whose citizens visit Bay Roberts for goods and services have also grown. These towns include Brugus, Cupids, Clark's Beach, and North River.

Businesses in the town are growing and expanding. Recently, Powell's Supermarket in Bay Roberts was named the best independent grocery store in Atlantic Canada by the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers. Shopper's Drug Mart opened at a large new site, and many other businesses have improved and expanded, while new businesses have opened.

In closing, on behalf of council, I want to thank all our staff, volunteers, committees and sponsors who continue to support and work tirelessly making our community the pride of Conception Bay. We are proud of our past and ready for the future.

We look forward to seeing you at many of our special events year round!

Bay Roberts National Winner Winterlights 2006
The town of Bay Roberts was officially proclaimed the national winner in the Winners Circle: Small Category [towns under 50,000] in the nation-wide Winterlights Celebration. The award recognized the Amalgamated Academy for its Community Spirit and Goodwill Programs.

On March 14th, 2007 the town hosted a celebration at the Visitors' Pavilion. All those who volunteered to work on the Winter Carnival were aware of the significance of the win. Bay Roberts with a population of about 5500 had been competing with towns with populations of up to 50,000. The announcement, which was made at the awards ceremony held in Ottawa on February 17th, 2007, marks the second time in three years that Bay Roberts was named national winner in its category. The town claimed the title in 2005 and last year was awarded five stars for the large display of nativity scenes prepared by the local congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

During the 2006 - 2007 Festival of Lights and Winter Carnival many exciting events were held.

On Saturday, March 31st, one the the last winter events will be held - the Run for the Janeway.

TOURISM

Over the past year, the Tourism Committee and its Pigeon Inlet subcommittee, under the leadership of committee chair, Councillor Clarence Mercer, have been quite busy. In cooperation with the Bay Roberts Heritage Society they developed a new pamphlet about the Bay Roberts East Heritage Walk, which includes a detailed map of trail. They also developed and published a new pamphlet about the town, which included a detailed map of the town.

The Pigeon Inlet Project will be a broad based tourism development grown from the writings of native son, Ted Russell, one of Newfoundland's most famous writers. The committee is hoping to have events planned as early as this summer! Keep checking for details.
