David French, award winning Canadian playwright, was born on Coley's Point. Each summer Jerry Mercer produces one of
his plays at the Victoria LOL #3 Museum and Playhouse. In 2011, David French's play "1949" will be presented.

Tidy Towns "Award of Excellence" - 2010
Tidy Towns awards were announced on September 7, 2010 at the Delta Hotel in St. John’s as part of the Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador 60th Annual Convention. The Award of Excellence honours communities who have scored the highest overall on the evaluation grid for two consecutive years. Bay Roberts won for towns with a population of over 5000.

2009 Tidy Towns Award - Population category of over 3500. The town tied with Clarenville for this award, and there were 8 other competitors. Tidy Towns is a project of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Advisory Committee is committed to engaging communities, large and small to participate in a program of civic pride. It promotes awareness in 'green' projects that improve the quality of the environment and contribute to cleaner air, soil and water with particular emphasis on making the most of the natural beauty of our communities.
2009 Torngat Municipal Achievement Award in the category of Environmental Sustainability Town of Bay Roberts and the Town of Spaniard's Bay - won for their joint efforts on the Shearstown Estuary.The Torngat Municipal Achievement Awards program, an initiative of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, recognizes the exemplary efforts of member municipalities in serving their residents and improving quality of life in their community and in the province as a whole. Environmental Sustainability is at the forefront of municipal concerns with waste management, water treatment and infrastructure development just to name a few. This award will recognize those municipal governments that have taken steps to resolve these policy challenges in an environmentally responsible way.
The Bay Roberts Town Council, as well as community groups and organizations, sponsor many events during the year. Chomper, the town mascot, was created to represent the spirit of the town at various events.
